At D. G. Paterson & Sons, Inc. every customer’s needs are unique to their project and that is the way we approach each one.

Our Process

The following are steps typically taken to achieve the final product:

Please call our office or fill in the contact form on this website to schedule an initial appointment. When you visit our showroom please bring a drawing with dimensions. Our sales staff will discuss your plans with you and assist you in granite selection.
Upon your approval of the granite slab(s) for your project, we will schedule a date to template the surfaces to be installed. The template is necessary to ensure exact measurements and proper fit of your granite.
After the template is returned to our shop, the granite is fabricated according to the template.
Installation of the fabricated stone is usually within 5-10 business days of the template date.

From your initial visit to our showroom and warehouse to the final installation, our staff is available to assist and support you through every step of the process. It is our goal to ensure your complete satisfaction with your customized granite surface.

What is Granite?

Granite is an igneous rock, also known as “fire rock.” It is formed by slowly cooling pockets of magma deep in the Earth’s crust. It is an organic material composed of feldspar, mica, and quartz.

What is the word "granite" derived from?

From the Latin word “granum” meaning grain, or granular texture.

What are the contemporary uses for granite?

Commercially, granite is used for monuments, war memorials, tombstones, street curbs and building facades.

In the residential area, granite is used for kitchen countertops and floors, bath vanity tops and floors, bath and shower area surrounds, fireplace hearths, mantles and surrounds, staircases, outside grill and kitchen areas, windowsills, and virtually any place a homeowner can envision installing this versatile material.

Why would a homeowner consider the use of granite for various rooms, including, but not limited to, kitchens, baths, family rooms, outdoor areas, etc.?

Because granite is a natural material, organic in nature, durable, stain and scratch resistant, and easily maintained. Granite comes in a wide range of colors and varies in appearance from relatively consistent texturing to wildly fluctuating patterns.

In addition, every custom countertop is unique and customized according to the homeowner’s individual aesthetic.

What is the single quality that sets granite apart from man-made materials used for the same applications (i.e., Formica, Corian, or Wilsonart)?

Granite is a natural material and contains a depth of color and texture that simply cannot be replicated in manufactured materials.

Why do samples of granite with the same name differ in textural appearance and/or color?

Since granite occurs in nature and is not manufactured, it is not uniform in appearance. Every slab is different, even when cut from the same block of granite after being quarried. The definitive characteristics of the granite you choose are absolutely unique.

How do I care for my granite countertop in a kitchen or bath?

Clean up with mild soap and water works well, and today supermarkets carry granite cleaning products that are safe and effective for everyday use and tough clean-ups. There are a variety of online sites (StoneCare.com and StoneTechPro.com) that carry various spray cleaners, polishes and sealants especially formulated for granite.

It is not recommended to use glass cleaners or vinegar-based products on granite surfaces.

Should I apply a sealant to the granite surface in a kitchen or bath?

Your countertops have been sealed prior to installation. Some stones may require sealing more often than others, it depends on the stone’s porosity and daily use. The more non-porous granites may require sealing once every few years. It is a simple process and there are many products available in stores on online, please refer to the websites above in question 7.

Does granite stain? How hygienic is granite?

In general, granite does not stain. Water left on a granite countertop for a long period of time may show evidence of moisture. It will evaporate and any “dark spot” will disappear.

If oil is left on a granite countertop and not cleaned, the oil may be absorbed into the stone. However, in time the oil will naturally re-distribute itself in the stone until it is undetectable.

Since granite is non-porous, bacteria is not absorbed into the stone. This creates a very sanitary surface for cooking and preparing food in the kitchen.

How scratch-resistant is granite, is it heat-resistant?

Normal daily kitchen countertop use will not mar the finish of the granite. Although we don’t recommend it, you can cut directly on the surface of your countertop. Cutting on a granite countertop is much more likely to damage your knives than the granite surface.

Granite is heat-resistant which means that any hot pot or pan that is placed on top of the countertop will not leave an unsightly burn mark or otherwise harm it.
